California ECE ๐ŸŒŸ MMR Immunity Overview

What Is It & Why Is It Needed?

The MMR vaccine protects against Measles, Mumps, and Rubella.

Why Zen Educate Requires It

Zen Educate partners with many school districts and early childhood centers. To ensure the safety of students and staff, all educators must provide proof of two MMR doses (or proof of immunity via blood titers).

Under California law (SB 792), MMR immunity is mandatory for all staff and volunteers in Early Childhood Education (ECE) and daycare settings. California does not accept religious or personal belief exemptions. Only a valid medical exemption from a licensed California physician (MD or DO) is accepted.

โœ… Ways to Show Immunity

1๏ธโƒฃ Locate Your Records

Record Source Action Steps
State immunization information system (IIS)

Access the California Digital Vaccine Record portal.

If you grew up out-of-state, use the CDC IIS Search.

K-12 Schools Request records from the high school you attended. Your vaccination records follow you throughout your public school years.
Family Doctor Call your childhood pediatrician or current primary care provider to request a "Vax Summary."
The "Yellow Card" Ask a parent or guardian if they kept your original Yellow Immunization Card or childhood baby book.
University Records Contact the Student Health Services or Registrar. They are required to keep these records for decades.
Immigration Papers Check your personal immigration filing for your medical exam results or contact the doctor who performed your USCIS exam.

๐Ÿ’‰ Immunization Records: Why Your Birth Year Matters

Finding your records is often easier once you know what "era" you were born in:

  • Before 1957: You are generally presumed to have natural immunity. In most cases, no further proof is needed.
  • Born 1957 โ€“ 1989: Most people in this group received only one dose as children. Because California schools now require two, you may need to get a second dose or a Titer Test.
  • Born 1989 or Later: This is when the CDC officially switched to the two-dose requirement. If you were born in this window, you likely have both, but you still need the paperwork to prove it.

2๏ธโƒฃ Can't Locate Your Immunization Records?

๐Ÿงช Option 1: The Titer Test (Blood Test)

If you believe you were vaccinated but cannot find your records, you can take an MMR Titer Test. This is a simple blood test that checks for antibodies in your system.

Zen Educate partners with Wellness Mart for Titer Test services in California.

Results: To be considered immune, your lab report must show Positive/Reactive for all three: Measles, Mumps, and Rubella. If any are negative or non-reactive, this means you DO NOT have full immunity and will need to consider a second vaccine.

๐Ÿฉบ Option 2: Getting the Vaccine

If you have no records and your Titer Test is negative or non-reactive but shows some immunity โ€”talk with your doctors to make sure the vaccine is right for you.

You may choose to get vaccinated but you will need to wait one month between your first and second doses of the vaccine.

๐Ÿฅ Have Insurance?

Visit your primary care doctor or a local pharmacy (CVS, Walgreens).

โค๏ธ Uninsured?

Visit a community clinic or the California Department of Public Health local office.

Request a Vaccination Administration Record after your shot.
