Personal Appearance

In order to ensure schools remain professional environments conducive to learning, all Zen employees must look neat, clean, well-groomed, and should be dressed appropriate for a school environment and in adherence with school guidelines.

Educators are expected to take time to learn the school dress code. School dress codes must be adhered to.

In addition, Educators are expected to use good judgement given the nature of the work. As a general rule, do not wear clothing items with rips/tears, or that are transparent or overly revealing or tight and avoid clothes that sag. The following are additional guidelines:

  • Clothing should be well-fitting and not constitute a safety hazard.
  • All employees should practice common sense rules of cleanliness and comfort. This includes rotating clothing day-to-day.
  • When jeans are appropriate for the position, the jeans must be in good condition and not torn
  • Tank tops, tee-shirts, jogging suits, flip-flops, slippers, sandals, garments that are unnecessarily revealing, garments that are excessively baggy and loose, sweatpants and other similar apparel are generally not permitted.
  • The text and graphics on any clothing and personal items should be appropriate for an all-age audience.
  • Personal appearance should include cleanliness. If an employee shaves, then the employee’s facial hair should be clean-shaven or trimmed. If an employee does not shave, facial hair should be clean.
  • Jewelry may be restricted for safety reasons, based on the position.

Educators who report to work improperly dressed or groomed may be instructed by their School Administrator, their Account Manager, or another Zen or School employee to return home to change. The time absent for this purpose will be unpaid unless state law requires otherwise.

Nothing in this policy is intended to prevent employees from wearing a hair or facial hair style that is consistent with their cultural, ethnic or racial heritage or identity. This policy will be interpreted to comply with applicable local, state or federal law. Zen will reasonably accommodate exceptions to this policy if required due to an educators religious beliefs, medical condition or disability.

Educators with questions about or who require accommodations from the Personal Appearance policy should contact their Account Manager or the Zen Support Team at 213-516-6054 or help@zeneducate.com.
